Day 71/72.

Yesterday we had a very stressful morning. Olly the olive ridley had been savagely attacked by popeye the green turtle! We only found out because popeye had a massive chubk of ollys bloody flipper in his mouth! It was horrible to see. So we split them all up and treated ollys wound with some medicine. Even today he does not look good. 😪 poor thing. And then the other green turtles were trying to attack sam and omg it was such a stressy situation.

Anyways yesterday and today have (except for that instance) been extremely lazy. Especially today, all ive done is lie on the coach all day. Its been raining this weekend which im kind of glad about because the temperature is lower after the past week of being extremely high. Last night we said au revoir to lihn 😪

Other than that nothing else to report!

Then i took them out to play. We got home and had tea, and then we tried to watch asias got talent but i dont think we have the channel 😭 today was sooo hot and i am so tired for some reason!! Need an early night i think

Day 68/69.

Yesterday we buried a lot of eggs and a lot of hatchlings had their birthday ☺️ we fed the small turtles and got ready for teaching. Teaching was good! Maths again 👌 and dave did some geography with them as well. I stayed in ambalangoda and met up with some of my mates here to hang out. That was really nice.

Today we tank cleaned! I hate tank cleaning yaaay haha it was hard today, although we got through it! And a well deserved swim after. We went teaching again and i took the boys with pernille and dave. They were ok today, could have been worse could have been better. So yeah now ive just awoke from a nap and ready for tea!!

Day 66.

Well last night i slept well, and woke up to the nice hotel and nice weather. I could have slept in but my body clock woke me up at 7am haha so i gotready, spent some time at the beach and some time in the pool (love the pool) and then after completely relaxing we headed to get lunch – a nice chinese restaurant. And then we headed home.. I read for ages in my room i was so tired for some reason! Think it was the heat. And then we ate tea and met our new volunteer, dave from yorkshire! Born in holmfirth!! Small world eh! So yeah now ready for bed and a days ‘work’ tomorrow ☺️

Ps you will be getting this late as the wifi wasnt working last night

Day 67.

Well today we woke to load sof babies and about 350 eggs to bury! We had a green turtle on our beach last night and ruwan woke me up to watch it 🐢 it was really cool to watch, i forget how big they get! Theyre bloody massive!!!! So yeah it was quite quick as well so it wasnt too taxing on sleep haha.

today we were supposed to be tank cleaning but dudley decided not to so i needed something to do. So i went beach cleaning as the tode had come in loads and brought with it absolutely loads of plastic rubbish. After ages cleaning, and also feeding all of the turtles, we had lunch and chilled out. Dave and i went to ambalangoda to get some stuff and i saw some of my ambalangoda friends. We came back and chilled more and then we released 156 turtles! All greens so it was really fast and nice ☺️

Now im ready for bed again!!

Day 64/65.

Going to post text on one post and pics on another because wordpress doesnt like me mixing so much together… So heres the text

Its friday again! I dont like how fast these fridays are coming and going haha!! We had an early start today, we set off at 6am for a weekend trip! We made a 3 hour drive to Sinharaja Rainforest where we arrived and got shown to our guide. Sinharaja is a national rainforest, massive, with dense trees, streams, rivers and everything full of wildlife. We stopped at a bakery thing to get breakfast and i got three bread rolls with stuff inside them.. The first one was the spiciest thing ever, definately woke me up. And the other two were sausage based and were nice.

We went on a 4 hour hike through the forest and saw so much nature. There were loads of chameleons, fish in streams, waterfalls, monkeys, birds, insects, snakes, spiders (they were bigger than my face i could barely look at the bastard things) and loads more! The climate within it was cool and hunid, very comfortable for hiking 👌 we just kept walking and pernille made friends with a blue magpie which was cute. Then we walked up a steep hill to which we saw a big trew i mean huuuge tree. 6.3m in diameter, 53m tall. And then we walked back down… And then we spotted which was the most annoying thing ever – leeches. They live in the wet leaves and when you stepped on them they latched onto your shoes and crawled up your leg!! Linh had fuck loads on her legs and thats how we noticed and started checking every 5 minutes haha. I had one on the top of my foot which when it came off made my foot bleed for ages! Bastards. And then i had one more and that was it but there were loads on our shoes trying to get us!

I think the nicest part was going into like a part below the track and taking a dip in the stream. It was fresh, clear water, absolutely freezing to the touch. I walked about in it at first but then found a little pool thing and went fully in, it was sooo nice i was just laying in it.. Came out ao cold but oon dried off in the warmness of the air haha. Yeah that was really nice. Then we walked back and got back in the car.

We set off at about 1pm to go to udawallawa national park. Its where the majority of elephants live. We got to the hotel and had a sandwich and i finished life of pi ( the book ) and then we set off again at 5:30pm to go to the elephant orphanage. We got there in time for feeding and they were all baby elephants!!! (Hence orphanage) they are so cute i could barely handle it. They all came running into theor enclosure and deank milk and ate some grass things 😫🙈😍🐘 we watched them for about half an hour and named the smallest one pablo. Finally giving my elephant tattoo meaning! So then we went to get dinner at a nice restaurant and now im back at the hotel (with air conditioning and hot showers) just chillllllaxin 💅🙌

Oh yeah and there is a baby gecko outside my rom that is the most amazing cutest little soldier iver laid eyes on. Franzisca and i found him before dinner and he stayed there when we returned. He jumped on my legs and i picked him up and i knew we had a connection. ❤️ i have attached a selfie i took with ‘Tony’ – named by franzica.

Sorry i ouldnt post yesterday the wifi was apalling! So today we got up at 6am to set off on another safari! Our guide was really nice and the jeep was soo much better this time. The national park isnt as touristy at yala so it was nice to be the only jeep we could see for the majority of the trip. We saw elephants, jackals, crocodiles, eagles, loads of birds, monitor lizards, monkeys and loads more. It was a really nice day as well so all the animals were out and about! I am glad we went in the morning because then the animals are most active. After our safari we spent some time in the hotel and set off to tangalle. We stopped off at a temple which we had to climb (also had many monkeys) it was a rock temple so you could go into like a cave and see all the lying buddhas and statues etc. it was really spiritual. At the top i got blessed and given yet another string  bracelet. Now i am at the hotel, its so nice.. There is a pool and its nice to swim in water thats not salty!! Going to have dinner somewhere tonight so looking forward to that!

Day 63.

Bloody hell i have been here for over two months?!?! Wow.

Happy poya day!! Its the full moon day in sri lanka which means a holiday! Which means lots of sri lankan locals at the hatchery which means no holiday for us! Woop 🙈🐢 naa it wasnt too bad today, the weather was perfect.. Sat in the sun all day and now i am BLACK i mean proper black. The chef here thought i was indonesian. Not english. Hahahahha how joke is that 😹😹

We woke to 68 baby olive ridley turtles which was cuuuute. And then we buried 106 eggs as well 👌 then the rest of the day was literally just sitting about not going to lie haha the locals keep to themselves and there were no tourists! So yeah i started and nearly finished life of pi (the book) and topped up my tan to the extreme. The full moon brings in the tide so there were pools on the beach, franzisca and i spent at least an hour and a half just lying in them haha ao nice and hot! So yeah nothing else happened, we all just chilled! Ready for an early start tomorrow 👊

Day 61/62.

Yoyoyoyo sorry missed yesterday again haha so lazy. Yesterday we worked the hatchery and went teaching – we seem to be having LOADS of schools recently! The kids are alright but trying to get them to stop touching the turtles is a major stress hah. So yeah we went teaching at the temple and i taughtthe kids maths again, fractions in fact. They are too clever. I always run out of things to teach’em so i took them outside to play whats the time mr wolf – classic. It was a really nice day all the way up to when it bucketes down! We released loads of babies in the rain which was fun haha.

Today we worked the hatchery again, i took a lovely new yorker couple round and we had like 1000 kids come today aswell 😫🙈 so yeah that was stressy and then we went teaching, the boys were good today!!! They behaved so well! Pernille and i took them and yeah they learned a lot! I taught them biology today so just anatomy and some organs. They deserved to play so we went outside and played ‘bang’ a new game pernille thought of, it took a while to get them to ynderstand the rules but in the end it was really good!

So yeah it was a good day, ive started just taking in the surroundings of where i work and its just amazing. You kind of forget the beauty of everything you walk past haha (deep shit i know) becomming a proper gap year guy 😹🙌

Day 60.

Last night we had to say goodbye to the one and only Sue. The hatchery will miss its loyal volunteer (as will i). We also released a lot of babies last night and then it rained.

Today was tank cleaning day. We all know what that means – arm day. By the end i was knackered. My arms felt like they were going to fall off ahhaa.  After we finished we went swimming in the sea and then had a shower and lunch. Yhe afternoon was spent just dossing around the hatchery reading – a well earned rest i think. And now im chilling in the living room 👌 need to prepare for teaching tomorrow but im tooooo tired haha
