Day 2.

Forgot to mention yesterday i buried 150 turtle eggs 👍 last night i got a call from the chef that a turtle was laying eggs on the beach, so at 10pm all of us went to the beach and watched this MASSIVE turtle lay her eggs 🙌 it was amazing to watch and my volunteers couldn’t believe i buried eggs and watched a turtle lay some on my first day!
Anyways, today i was supposed to go to the lagoon, however plans changed and i ended up working the hatchery all day – i will have Wednesday off to make up for it. I spent the morning learning how to do tours and generally cleaning the hatchery but after lunch i went sand crab hunting… Sand crabs are the ugliest things ever – they do not look like crabs at all, just weird alien oval shaped crustaceans haha. They are hard to catch as well because you have to stand at the top of the beach and look when the waves go out for their eyes that stick out the sand.. Their eyes are literally less than a centimetre so its hard to spot them.. Took me about an hour to get used to it but i got it in the end. You have to SPRINT to the crabs and dig into the sand (they bury themselves when they feel you coming) and then once you have one you chuck it onto the beach where someone else collects them. By the end of it i was running into the sea and throwing loads out haha its a lot of fun. We feed the crabs to the turtles, which was also pretty fun. We did this until 5pm when we finish work. I now have a favourite turtle and his name is sam, he is an albino and i have attached a couple of pics.
Generally, im loving sri lanka. The people are so welcoming, every other local sparks up a conversation. I am glad im getting into a routine, although i do wish for lunch and dinner already.. The chef is amazing and so is the food 👌
My volunteer family now consists of lea, rachel and yvonne. They are all so so nice and im glad they are all so friendly ❤️.
The weather is consistently boiling and my feet are burnt 😫 thank god mam got me two tubs of aftersun hahaha
Tonight i sat on the beach and watched the sun set, BE-A-U-tiful

With love from sri lanka, jack ✌️
